GRNZ! – Symposium for Sound Art, Bioacoustics and Onomatopoeia

13. September , 16:00 - 22:00

The first edition of the newly founded “GRNZ!” symposium brings together four institutions working at the interface between science and art: The “Pegasus-Institut für Pataphysik”, the “IFTAF – institut für transakustische forschung” and IMA “Institut für Medienarchäologie” and the “Sandkasten Syndikat”.

The former Kulturgrenzen association, which once organized the legendary reheat festival at the Kleylehof in Nickelsdorf, has found a new field of activity in the Symposion Lindabrunn, exchanging an “e” in its name for a “u” and dedicating itself from now on to the on-site investigation of bioacoustic qualities in this special biotope.

Four institutions are involved in the first edition of the newly founded “GRNZ!” symposium:

1) The “Pegasus Institute for Pataphysics” – www.pip.iwf.at – represented by Peter Brandlmayr and Martina Moro As an institute for hantological pataphysics, it sees its task in the theoretical and practical investigation of actual and potential realities in order to document the diversity and eccentricity of the world.

2) The “institute for transacoustic research” – www.iftaf.org – represented by Matthias Meinharter and Jörg Piringer. With expertise in visual arts, music, sound poetry and philosophy, this institute has been researching the self-proclaimed “transacoustics” since 1998 and conducts field research in public experiments, laboratories and expeditions.

3) The “Institute for Media Archaeology” – www.ima.or.at – represented by Elisabeth Schimana and Tamara Wilhelm. The Institute for Media Archaeology works at the interface between analog and digital, and at the interface between research and mediation, particularly in connection with acoustics, sound machines and digital music. The focus is on excavations of productions by women in the field of electronic art.

4) The “Sandkasten-Syndikat” www.sandkastensyndikat.org- represented by elet, Markus Liszt, David Pridal and Sandro Nicolussi (t.b.c.) Sandkasten Syndikat is a transdisciplinary artist collective at the intersection of media art, sound and performance, media culture and art theory. Founded in 2020 as an “association for transcultural and interdisciplinary artistic networking and cultural mediation”, the 10-member group has been able to establish sustainable collaborations and numerous interdisciplinary formats such as KLUB MØNTAGE. The Sandkasten Syndikat collective is currently based at the Semmelweisklinik art and culture association.

These four institutions will develop and present projects in the fields of sound art, bioacoustics and onomatopoeia in response to the unique local situation.

There will also be cooperation with local institutions and associations. Finally, other local and international institutions will be invited to network and exchange ideas in the context of “table talks”.
