“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” – This is the first sentence of the first article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
We, the umraum artists’ collective, shed light on the topics: locked up or locked out, remembering – forgetting, guilt – atonement, protection or freedom – in the exhibition and in the readings from a wide variety of perspectives.
The artists sit with their work in a closed room. Does art sit in an ivory tower or does it contribute to the further development of society? Is the inaccessible space for their protection or is it a prison?
“With the hands on the bars, the longing for freedom grows.”
(from the text QUANTANAMO by Johanna Haigl)
Exhibition at hte Symposion Lindabrunn
12. – 19. 9. 2020, 16:00
Reading: daily at 17:00
Parallel to this, the three-part art installation mare nostrum can be seen on the way to the exhibition container.
Keep Distance
A bright yellow canoe has run aground in the sand and tipped over. Did it manage to escape? Was anyone rescued?
Broken Dreams
Dreams and hopes lead people away from home. They set off to start new lives. A broken boat symbolizes the fragility of these hopes and the difficulties on the way to achieving dreams. Are they as broken as the boat?
Gestrandet (Stranded)
An abandoned boat lies on a barren embankment. Did people steer it here, did they get stranded or did a storm put it there? The boat is empty. No sign of life, nothing has been left behind. The hope of rescue lives on.
The exhibition marks the Fade Out – the conclusion of the 2020 art program and the end of the 20-year management of the Symposium Lindabrunn by the umraum artist collective.
