Matija Schellander, *1981 in Ludmannsdorf-Bilčovs, Austria.
Schellander lives and works as a composer, double bassist and electronic musician in Vienna. He composes for music ensembles, plays, contemporary dance performances and creates soundtracks for films.
A variety of influences – from Musique Concrete to hip-hop, techno, improvisation, jazz, new music, early music to traditional music and film music – identify works by Matija Schellanders, which he either produces or records himself or writes for instruments. Tones, sampling and organically moving sound images are central artistic elements of Matija Schellander’s works.
He works both solo and in collaboration with international artists.
Together with Maja Osojnik he founded the electro-acoustic duo Rdeča Raketa. He often collaborates with the Italian sound artist Attila Faravelli on performative field recordings.
He regularly composes for the directors Ivna Žic and Franz-Xaver Mayr at the Theater Neumarkt Zurich, the Theater Basel, the Schauspielhaus Graz, the Schauspielhaus Vienna and the Theater Ulm.
The sound comic Wendy Horse Death Mexico – produced in collaboration with the author Natascha Gangl and the composer Maja Osojnik – was awarded best radio play at the Berlin Radio Play Festival in 2018. The new trio piece “Revenge of the Snake Woman”, loosely based on Unica Zürn, celebrated its premiere in 2020.
