monochrom is an internationally active art-technology-philosophy collective. Founded in 1993, monochrom is based in Graz and Vienna. The group works with a wide variety of media and art formats. At the beginning of December 2005, monochrom took over the Lord Jim Loge, an artists’ association founded by Jörg Schlick, Martin Kippenberger and Wolfgang Bauer.
The group is known for working with different media and formats. Many projects have a performative character and favor critical and discursive narratives. Johannes Grenzfurthner calls it “the search for the best medium for the message”. monochrom sees itself as belonging to the political left. It strives to strengthen public discourse in civil society, sometimes using subversive affirmation or over-affirmation as a tactic. The group advocates the concept of context hacking.
