SUMMARY:The BABEL Experiment – Maurizio Nardo and Peter Brandlmayr
DESCRIPTION:During their residency\, Maurizio Nardo and Peter Brandlmayr will explore a fundamentally existent\, measuring and relative concept of language in theory and practice. The setting seems suitable to them\, as at the symposium humans coexist physically and mentally with animate and inanimate nature. The artists’ focus is on the threshold zones between the participants\, i.e. on impression and impression. \n\n\n\nBased on their experiences\, they would like to develop an experimental arrangement or an instrumental setting with which the relative discretion of fundamentally existing communication can become apparent\, in the form of an experiment including a theoretical introduction.

SUMMARY:The pillars and me - art education for school classes
DESCRIPTION:June 11th and 25th \n\n\n\nThe work The Pillars was created in 1978 by Tomou Kobori\, Mathias Hietz\, Franz Katzgraber and Jun Ohara. Nine simple\, cylindrical stone forms of varying heights stand to the right of the gravel road leading to the central communication center. The work requires participation on the part of the viewer\, as it consists of two elements: the supporting columns and an (invisible) weight-bearing form. Kobori\, who had the idea for this work\, imagined a castle in the air. To get to the bottom of this castle in the air\, you have to choose the right viewpoint. Only from this point of view are the pillars of the same height and together they can support the castle in the air. \n\n\n\nIn cooperation with local primary school classes\, workshops will be held for children in June\, where they can get to know the Lindabrunn Symposium and its sculptures through an active\, participatory artistic experience and create their own works.

SUMMARY:monocon – Barcamp
DESCRIPTION:monocon is an unconference with open workshops\, lectures and presentations that has been taking place since 2018. Its content and schedule are developed by the participants themselves at the beginning of the conference and shaped as it progresses. \nmonocon is organized by monochrom\, an internationally active art-technology-philosophy collective. Founded in 1993\, monochrom works with a wide variety of media and art formats and publishes the book and magazine series monochrom. \nThe art collective monochrom refers to their work method as “context hacking”\, referring to the hacker culture that propagates a creative and emancipatory approach to the technologies of the digital age and thus opposes the extension of a centuries-old culture of technological domination and expert hierarchies into the digital age. With its electronic mass media\, the democratization or socialization of the means of production seems feasible for the first time (without requiring anything other than a technological revolution). \nContext hacking transfers the claims and approaches of hackers to the social and societal conditions in which artistic production takes place and on which it is in turn dependent. In a metaphorical sense\, these also have a source code. They run programs that we are confronted with on a user interface. Where we know how and through what a space\, a niche\, a scene\, a subculture\, a media or political practice functions\, we can change and “recode” it\, deconstruct its power relations and emancipate ourselves from its constraints and modes of allocation.

SUMMARY:Residency: Katya Dimova
DESCRIPTION:The life of wild plants shows parallels to our society\, for example when neophytes are portrayed as unloved wild plants or women’s herbs are discredited by popular belief. \n\n\n\nIn textile books\, the artist passes on various storiesabout the healing powers of plants. In the NEOPHYTEN III books embroidered in 2023\, she focuses on neophytes. These plants arrived after 1492 with or without human intervention in an area where they were not previously native. Manyhave interesting properties\, healing powers or a variety of uses\, yet such species are blacklisted\, fought against and outlawed because they can conquer large areas and thus suppress the “native” fauna. “If we don’t allow plants with a history of migration to become part of ourpart of our culture\, they will remain marginalized\,” says the artist. \n\n\n\nIn her work\, Katya Dimova studies these plants on site in all their complexity and plays with the layers of meaning. Are (we) humans also neophytes?

SUMMARY:Produktionsaufenthalt – Claudia Rohrauer
DESCRIPTION:ANALOGUE FIELDWORK  \nAnalogue Fieldwork deals with the potential and possibilities of sustainable analog darkroom practice\, plant-based developers as an alternative to conventional photographic chemicals and thus with the future of analog photography. The central starting point is the ability of plants to act as a developer substance through the phenols and polyphenols they contain and to reduce silver salts to metallic silver. \nThe environment and surroundings in Lindabrunn become accomplices and co-producers of photographic image production; as an artist\, I hand over control of the processes to plants\, soil\, weather\, sun and\, last but not least\, to chance\, which may bring about unpredictable chemical reactions between the light-sensitive photographic material such as film and paper and the plant phenols. Tried and tested techniques will be played out with the ecological resources available at Lindabrunn: the production of plant-based film developers to develop photographic documentation of the work process; phytograms of plants growing on site: a technique in which the plant develops its own image through direct contact with the film material and anthotypes: ephemeral light images created by dyes from plants growing on site. In this way\, a site-specific portrait of the terrain is created – the depicted and the depicting grow together in the picture plane. Process documentation and “end results” meet on an equal level. \nANALOGUE FIELDWORK Workshop \nThe workshop offers an insight into alternative and sustainable processes in the analog photo lab. The central feature is the ability of plants to act as developing agents through the phenols and polyphenols they contain and to reduce silver salts to metallic silver. During a walk\, plants growing on site will be collected to serve as source material for image production: following the exploration of the area\, a film developer will be brewed from the plants to develop the photo documentation of the walk. On top of that\, the technique of the phytogram is presented\, in which plants develop their own image in the form of a silver image through direct contact with the film material. The collaborative process with a performative character opens up a field for an exchange on the relationship between environment\, material resource and image production as well as the depicted and the depictor. \nPrevious knowledge of photography is not a prerequisite\, but can be an advantage.

SUMMARY:The Limits of Resilience - lin. Symposion Ökologie und Kunst
DESCRIPTION:“Ecological resilience has been defined as the magnitude of disturbance that can be experienced before a system moves into a different state and different set of controls.” (Holling\, 1973) \nThe Limits of Resilience is organized by guest curators Malin Walleser (media artist\, carpenter) and Felix Gaulhofer (ecologist). Together with various artists\, ecologists\, musicians\, scientific and non-scientific researchers\, they will address the urgent topic of resilience in socio-ecological systems. It is intended to be a place for critical debate and research. The program includes visual art such as site-specific installations\, watercolours and sculptures\, performances\, concerts and sound art\, discussion formats\, artist talks and workshops. \nCURATORIAL APPROACH \nIn 1973\, Canadian ecologist C.S. Holling defined ecological resilience as the magnitude of disturbance that can be experienced before a system moves into a different state and different set of controls. In 2000\, the British human geographer Neil Adger described social resilience as the ability of human communities to withstand external shocks to their social infrastructure\, such as environmental fluctuations or social\, economic and political upheaval. However\, resilience is also the ability to live on in the face of change and emphasizes the need to accept change and adaptation as a fundamental property of systems in order to maintain continuity\, rather than assuming stability and trying to rationalize deviations from it. How much disruption can a system withstand? How far can a system adapt before it becomes an abolition? How fast can change be so that it is still tolerable? Resilient systems are able to restructure themselves and rely on dynamic learning and development processes. In order to imagine the future and develop new narratives\, we need to work together with art and culture. In this way\, people can be taken on a journey of transformation. \nProgram\nExhibition\nMarie Vermont: The common landscape of Lindabrunn (picture\, audio) \nJakob Schauer: A resilient sound-map (outdoor sound installation) \nHeidi Trimmel: Solutions I: communication (interactive intervention) \nHannah Todt: The difference between everything (site-specific installation) \nClaudia Rohrauer: Workshop and presentation of plant-based photo developers \nFelix Gaulhofer/ Malin Walleser: LB24_context_data (outdoor installation) \n  \nProgram Saturday: \n14:00 Opening \n14:30 Photo Workshop with plant-based photo developers (Claudia Rohrauer – limited number of participants\, please sign up before August 21st through post@claudiarohrauer.info \n15:00 Nature Walk with the  Landschaftspflegeverein (Landscape Conversation Assiciation) \n15:00 SOUNA heat wave (Sauna-Sound Art Installation: Golden Diskó Ship and Kollektiv RISS) until 20:00 \n17:00 My Water is Your Water (Workshop in Art & Activism: Mekhala Dave / Jakob Kukala\, EN) \n19:00 Dinner  \n20:00 Continuum of Resilience (Djonni Laser live) \n21:00 Performance (Heidi Trimmel) \n22:00 Echoes of Resilience (Nadeshda)  \n  \nProgram Sunday: \n12:30 Tour of the exhibition \n14:00 Activism & Resilience (Interactive lecture: Irene Nemeth) \n15:00 SOUNA heat wave (Sauna-Sound Art Installation: Theresa Stroetges/ Wiebke Frerichs/ Malin Walleser) until 18:00 \n15:30 Becoming symbiotic (Performative exploration with multispecies habitat interventions: Isa Klee) \n18:00 Open discussion (with Heidi Trimmel/ Mekhala Dave) \n \nProgram:\nMarie Vermont – The common landscape of Lindabrunn\nMarie Vermont’s Allmende [Common Land] refers to the common landscape\, which can be simultaneously entered and inhabited by various living beings without consumption. Insect larvae next to car tires\, knotweed\, bones\, berries\, cans\, birds\, building rubble and animals\, between wind\, weather and displacement. Since 2021\, the Allmende series with several hundred watercolors in small and large format has been created from stays in these public\, undesigned non-places. During the symposium The Limits of Resilience\, a series of paintings and an audio cassette from the common landscape of Lindabrunn will be produced based on the series. \n \nJakob Schauer – 7 horns and a semi-dry grassland\nThe 7-channel sound installation combines all the ambient sounds of the semi-arid grassland on the former communal land with an electronically generated sound structure. The listening experience extends over large parts of the site\, with the fusion of synthetic and “natural” sounds at the center of attention.Carefully selected sounds test the limits of the differentiability of our perception in the site-specific sound installation. \nHeidi Trimmel – System mapping the human-environmental system\nHeidi Trimmel creates a system-analytical map of the human-environment relationship in which decisive variables are defined and linked. Balancing and reinforcing cycles become visible. This map forms the basis for discussion about where forces should best be focused or released in order to achieve a (re)integration with nature. In Heidi’s opinion\, a renegotiation of the social contract that forms the basis of modern society must also include animate and inanimate nature. \nHannah Todt – The difference between everything\nThe residency at Lindabrunn offers the opportunity to consider resilience as fluctuating\, and to understand change not in terms of progress\, but to focus on its malleability\, which is not necessarily purposeful. Our imagination should be mobilized through non-scientific research and playful experimentation to enable a relationship with our environment that moves beyond the antagonistic relationship between harnessing and canonizing nature. Improvised gestures form a site-specific installation that builds on the existing landscape and refers to the structures and materials found in Lindabrunn. \nClaudia Rohrauer\nWorkshop and presentation of plant-based photo developers \nThe workshop offers an insight into alternative and sustainable processes in the analog photo lab. The central feature is the ability of plants to act as developing agents through the phenols and polyphenols they contain and to reduce silver salts to metallic silver. During a walk\, plants growing on site will be collected to serve as source material for image production: the phytogram technique will be presented\, in which plants develop their own image in the form of a silver image through direct contact with the film material. The photo documentation of the walk will then be developed in a plant-based solution. The joint process with a performative character opens up a field for an exchange about the relationship between environment\, material resource and image production as well as the depicted and the depicted. \nPrevious knowledge of photography is not a prerequisite\, but can be an advantage. \nPlease register in advance by 21.8. at post@claudiarohrauer.info \n \nLandschaftspflegeverein – Nature Walk\nThe Symposion in Lindabrunn is the largest contiguous dry grassland area on the southern thermal line with rarities such as fly orchid and yellow flax. The area has been used by artists since 1967\, creating a unique symbiosis of nature and art and preserving the dry grasslands\, which are also used as a recreational area\, to this day.Website: https://landschaftspflegeverein.at \n \n \nFelix Gaulhofer / Malin Walleser\nData collected\, saved\, postponed. Observed\, measured and structured values on a specific issue. Raw data systematized\, analysed and interpreted. The context is the purpose. The processing is its meaning. Subjective data processing is distorted. And what does it look like there? Is it the utopia that awaits there\, or the gloomy downfall? Have we taken it too far? Opportunity squandered. The frenzy of adaptation and the hysteria of change may heal us or destroy us. Perhaps we will only know when we have gone one step too far. \nArtistic processing of data collected according to scientific methodology. \n \nSOUNA – heat wave\n \nMekhala Dave – My Water is Your Water\nA Workshop in Art and Activism \nIn combining each of their situated practices\, the artist Jakob Kukula and the ocean law & policy researcher Mekhala Dave invite you to a workshop on celebrating water: its symbolic\, political and spiritual essence. In a world facing climate change\, water is witnessing relentless impacts. Human actions from colonial times and to present day negligence from neoliberal systems have raised pollution\, contamination and scarcity of water that is a global crisis to many vulnerable communities that depend on it. With more claims on property and privatization\, the access to ample water is increasingly restricted. Our connection with water is also compromised. \nIn anthropocentric conditions\, how can we unlearn our ways and take action? By taking water as inspiration and guidance\, we can aim to unlearn in plurality of exchanges on how to flow with water and in the porosity of water\, to collectively think of possibilities for resistance for our water bodies ‒ ice\, rivers\, lakes and ocean from different strategies that arise across rituals\, movements\, activist and artistic practices. From rooting in localized\, place-based struggles to the global commons\, we will respond from critical moments and activations surrounded by the artwork Loose Harbour (2017) from the artist Leo Schatzl that touches Symposium Lindabrunn’s history of crossing into watery worlds. \n \nDjonni Laser aka Johanna Walleser – continuum of resilience\nThe communication center\, which looks like a classic amphitheater made of natural stone\, is intended to be the stage and thus the experiential space for the live performance in the open air. Visible but decentralized\, the so-called arena will be played with Djonni Laser’s instruments and the corresponding equipment. The focus will be on the idea of a place of gathering and exchange. The listeners sit in a circle on different levels and can experience the intensity and quality of the sounds from each position through specially aligned loudspeakers. Neoclassical\, partly polyrhythmic piano playing based on “continuous music” is accompanied by spherical\, noise sounds and the voice sometimes serves as noise\, sometimes as an instrument. The focus is on the sound experience. Resilience should be experienced as an empowering state in the group process. An emotional and real borderline experience and border crossing is approached in a musical way in order to generate the moment of a shared\, profound process. \nHeidi Trimmel\nLive performance \nNadeshda aka Andreas Haslauer – Echoes of Resilience\nA cassette loop performance deals with the exploration of the resilience of cassette tapes. It attempts to break the boundaries of the medium (on a mechanical and musical level). I am trying to reach a point where the emotional and beautiful endurance of the music and recordings evolves into a fractured and harsh sound. A performance that creates a sense of tension in which the hypnotic and continuous sound of repetition\, despite the breaking of the recordings and a fit of discomfort\, retains its beauty. \nIrene Nemeth – Activism & resilience (interactive lecture)\n…using the example of a local initiative against a road project\, the Wiener Neustadt eastern bypass \nThe lecture moves from the definition of the term and general considerations on activism and resilience to a specific project where people have become active. After a brief review of the history of the controversial road project and the legal steps\, we will look at the initiatives that have been formed\, the activities that have been undertaken and the creative inputs that have emerged. We look at how cooperation between a citizens’ movement and activists can work\,what synergies there are and where sticking points or conflicts can arise\, we report on strategies and speculate whether or where the term “resilience” can be applied at all\, and by dealing with this project\, hidden talents came to light among the protagonists. Whether thiscreativity already touches on the field of art remains to be seen. \nIsa Klee – Becoming Symbiotic \nPerformative exploration with multispecies habitat interventions \nThe performative walk focuses on species living on site\, such as the toadflax bee\, which nests on the dry grassland in early summer. The aim is to become symbiotic with the landscape and its more-than-human inhabitants; as part of the performative exploration\, Klee encourages visitors to experience their own role in the ecosystem anew through habitat interventions for other species. Yellow cloths and building materials – as used for constructive activities in urban development – as well as found\, renewable raw materials on site will be used. Human interventions in the landscape will be thematised and reflected upon\, and new approaches to sculpture and landscape will be explored. (Please bring yellow scarves and cloths made from natural materials). \n \nReferences: \nAdger\, W.N. (2000): Social and ecological resilience: are they related? SUMMARY:Save the House - Call for Donations
DESCRIPTION:Crowdfunding \nMost of you will have noticed over the last few months that the clubhouse is in dire need of renovation and we have a lot of work to do. A lot of energy\, lifeblood and volunteer hours have gone into maintaining the building. Students from the design.build studio\, a course at the Vienna University of Technology under the direction of Peter Fattinger\, have been developing a new concept for the front part of the Vereinshaus since last year and will be implementing it between April and June.\nTwo new exhibition spaces will be created\, and in the following year we will devote ourselves to renovating the rear section. \nBut it also takes money and sponsorship to pay for our material costs. \n♥ We kindly ask for your support and donations \nCrowdfunding \nVerein Symposion Lindabrunn\nRaika Enzesfeld\nIBAN: AT07 3204 5000 0080 5317\nBIC: RLNWATWWBAD \n

SUMMARY:design.build Studio - New construction of the Clubhouse facade
DESCRIPTION:The Symposion Lindabrunn Clubhouse is a wooden barrack from the 1980s and has proven itself as a creative space over the decades. Despite its robustness and repairability\, the building is now badly affected by its age\, exposed location and the weather. Its structural condition now presents the association with considerable infrastructural and resource-related challenges. \nAt the same time\, however\, an architectural adaptation offers the opportunity not only to improve the usability of the building\, but also to expand the possibilities for events and artistic performances. \nA collaboration with design.build studio of the Vienna Technical University which has started in autumn 2024 provides pioneering solutions. \n \nhttps://www.design-build.at/ \nThis practice-oriented teaching format for architecture students makes it possible to work on real construction tasks in all their complexity. The students go through the entire process\, from the initial design idea to the actual construction\, working as a large team. They experience how design and craftsmanship go hand in hand – an approach that differs from the usual separation of disciplines in architectural practice. \nDirected by Professor Peter Fattinger\, the design.build studio has realized projects of international relevance for over two decades\, including temporary installations in public spaces and permanent educational and community buildings in Austria\, South Africa and Indonesia. Their work has been presented in renowned exhibitions worldwide\, for example at the Architecture Biennale in Venice\, the German Architecture Museum in Frankfurt\, the Center for Architecture in New York City and the Architekturzentrum Wien. \nThe current annual project for 2024/25 is dedicated to the comprehensive adaptation of the Clubhouse at Symposion Lindabrunn. The plans include the renovation of the façades\, the redesign of the entrance area and forecourt as well as a protective canopy. The front area of the building is to be given a new quality as an interface to the public space\, with exhibition options and flexible solutions for events. \n \nThe conceptual phase began in October 2024 and a final design will be developed in a collaborative process by the end of the year\, which will be worked out in detail from January 2025. From the beginning of April to the end of June 2025\, the students will then work on the practical construction work on site. The construction process will be carried out in close collaboration with the carpenters from Kollektiv Riss\, who already successfully completed the refurbishment of the association’s exhibition space in 2022. \nThe cooperation between Symposion Lindabrunn and design.build studio creates sustainable added value. Instead of a mere refurbishment\, innovative and forward-looking concepts are being realized that unfold the potential of this unique location. Not only will the building be adapted\, but the connection between art\, architecture and public space will also be strengthened. \n

SUMMARY:Touching Time in the Memorial - Kunst ist Klasse
DESCRIPTION:Special Project within the framework of OEAD Funding Kunst ist Klasse \nTouching Time in the Memorial is a project of pluralistic remembrance. Young people work with artists from the Symposion Lindabrunn association to create and design a sculpture of many monuments to commemorate the concentration camp in Hirtenberg\, Lower Austria. Women from all over Europe were exploited here for the local munitions factory in the immediate vicinity of the symposium. Under the project management of Petra Mühlmann-Hatzl\, artist and VSL board member\, art mediator and educator at _dieARTE and at BG Neunkirchen\, pupils at MS Hirtenberg and VSL artists learn about the history of their region and develop individual and collective references in their own monuments. \nMany students have transnational references to history\, for some war is not a past but a present family reality. Workshops with artists who have dealt with intercultural perspectives of historiography and monuments as cultural and artistic settings in their work and in some cases also from their biographies\, create an awareness of design and symbolism based on the subcamp stele and the sculptures at the Lindabrunn Symposium. In June 2025\, Touching Time in the Memorial will be presented at the Lindabrunn Symposium. The sculpture of the many monuments will be exhibited in the Lindabrunn Symposium sculpture park over the summer and will subsequently be on display at the Hirtenberg secondary school. The project and process will also be documented and published by all participants on the Digital Holocaust Memorial platform. \nFunded by: \n \n

SUMMARY:Im CUBO: Claudia Rohrauer
DESCRIPTION:Analogue Fieldwork\nThe installation at CUBO provides an insight into an artistic and research-based exploration of the potential and possibilities of sustainable analog darkroom practice and plant-based developers as an alternative to conventional photographic chemicals. The central starting point is the property of plants to act as a developer substance through the phenols and polyphenols they contain and to be able to reduce silver salts to metallic silver. The resources\, materials and materiality of image production are up for debate.\nThe environment and surroundings in Lindabrunn become accomplices and co-producers of photographic image production; as an artist\, I hand over control of the processes to plants\, weather\, light\, temperature and\, last but not least\, to chance\, which may bring about chemical reactions between the light-sensitive photographic material such as film and paper and the plant phenols that cannot be calculated in advance. What is depicted and what is depicted grow together in the picture plane. Process documentation and final results meet on an equal level.\nArtist: Claudia Rohrauer\nwebsite: http://www.claudiarohrauer.info \n  \n

SUMMARY:Salon im Grünen - Opening CUBO\, Hörzelle
DESCRIPTION:Art in the open natural space – two new exhibition formats at Symposion Lindabrunn! \nFor the first time\, two new projects allow visitors to experience contemporary art in the open natural space at Symposion Lindabrunn alongside the stone sculptures. \nThey will be opened on 03.08. at 16:00. \nThe listening cell offers sound art with a view and was developed from a converted telephone booth. Here you can listen to four different radio plays and pieces of music that change throughout the year. \nThe Cubo is a new exhibition space in the grounds where young and established artists can show their work for most of the year. \nClaudia Rohrauer\, who has been conducting intensive research into the use of plant-based photo developers for years\, will kick things off. In her solo exhibition at Cubo\, the young artist will be showing large-format photos that were taken on site and developed using extracts from the plants. \nAnother premiere is the “Salon im Grünen” format immediately afterwards. \nThe focus is on the exchange with individual artists in a relaxed\, open space for discursive discussion\, exchange and in-depth insights. \nPerformance artist Sheri Avraham\, who spent two weeks working on the symposium\, will be a guest here. \nA varied afternoon of art\, intensive exchange and leisurely chatting and strolling in the natural area awaits visitors. \nThis project was made possible thanks to the support of \nArt in Public Space Lower Austria \nBMWKMS\, Cultural Initiatives Section \nTranslated with DeepL.com (free version)
